Module 6:  Preventing corruption in project construction

Conclusion

Fraud, bribery, and extortion can be common during the construction phase of an infrastructure project.

It is therefore imperative that:

  • awareness is raised about how corruption takes place during the construction phase and how it can be prevented
  • effective anti-corruption controls are put in place by all relevant project participants throughout the project cycle
  • effective monitoring, reporting, investigation and enforcement systems are implemented.

It is far cheaper and preferable to prevent corruption from occurring than to allow it to take place, or to deal with the consequences later.

Detailed analysis and actions for preventing corruption on infrastructure projects are contained on GIACC’s website at: https://giaccentre.org/pacs-overview/

(Note:  Separate online modules cover how corruption takes place in the procurement and construction phases, how to prevent corruption in the procurement phase, and how to investigate corruption in the procurement and construction phases).
