Module 9:  Project contractual structure, rights and obligations

Project participants: Sub-contractor

A sub-contractor enters into a contract with the contractor to provide work in relation to the project.

A sub-contractor is normally appointed to undertake a specific part of the construction which is suitable for that sub-contractor’s skills.  For example:

  • the excavation of the site
  • construction of the foundations
  • installation of drainage
  • installation of mechanical & electrical equipment (lights, plumbing, heating)
  • installation of building and roof cladding.

In some cases, a sub-contractor may enter into a contract with another sub-contractor to undertake part of the other sub-contractor’s work (a “sub-sub-contractor”).
