Module 9:  Project contractual structure, rights and obligations

Project participants: Contractor

The contractor enters into a contract with the project owner to construct the whole or part of the project.

In some cases, a contractor may undertake all of the contracted work itself using its own personnel and equipment.

In other cases, a contractor may provide only the overall management of the project using its own resources.  It will then:

  • sub-contract the construction work to sub-contractors
  • obtain necessary expertise from consultants
  • hire equipment from equipment hire companies
  • purchase materials from suppliers.

In most cases, contractors partly carry out the works themselves, and partly carry out the works using sub-contractors, suppliers and consultants.
