Module 9:  Project contractual structure, rights and obligations

Variations

The contract will normally contain a process by which the project owner or project engineer (if one has been appointed) can “vary” or “change” the contract work obligations.  For example, change the:

  • building dimensions
  • materials to be used
  • drainage layout
  • lighting design.

The change can normally only be implemented through a formal written variation issued under the specified contract variation process.

The variation will normally result in any necessary consequent adjustment to:

  • the contractor’s price
  • the time the contractor has to complete the works.
